PITMAN, NJ --- The College of New Jersey senior
Justin Wain and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater junior
John Zakowski have been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Men's Tennis East and West Division Players of the Year, respectively, for the 2022 season. Their selections highlight the 16-member 2022 NJAC Men's Tennis Divisional All-Conference Teams which were announced on May 3.
Additionally, Ramapo freshman
Siddharth Byreddy and UW-Whitewater freshman
Niclas Goltz were named Rookies of the Year for their respective divisions.
All selections were made by a vote of the league's eight head coaches and were based on conference-only match results.
Wain led TCNJ to a 3-0 record in the NJAC East Division as the Lions secured a spot in the NJAC Championship against UW-Whitewater. He went 3-0 at top flight singles and teamed with Matthew Michibata for a 3-0 record at top flight doubles. Wain, a four-time NJAC East Division Player of the Week, wrapped up the regular season with a 16-1 overall singles record including 13-0 in dual match actioin. He and Michibata also went 11-3 in dual match doubles play.
Zakowski helped UW-Whitewater to a perfect NJAC West Division record as the Warhawks earned a spot in the NJAC Championship against TCNJ. He went 2-0 in top flight singles play in West Division action and teamed up with Alex Gray for a 2-0 record at top flight doubles. Zakowski is 21-8 overall in singles this season and he and Gray are 23-8 in doubles.
Byreddy earns the Rookie of the Year honor after leading Ramapo in NJAC East Division play. The freshman played at the number one spot, taking Wain to three sets and 2021 Player of the Year Nico Teynie to three sets. Byreddy is a two-time NJAC Rookie of the Week and one-time NJAC Player of the Week and led Ramapo to an overall 8-5 dual match record.
Goltz is a seven-time NJAC West Division Rookie of the Week and one-time Player of the Week. He went 3-0 in NJAC West Division doubles action with teammate Ryan Mitchell, including a win at top flight doubles over UW-La Crosse. He added a singles win in the Warhawks' win over UW-Eau Claire. Goltz is 14-2 in singles this season and he and Mitchell are 11-4 in doubles.
UW-Whitewater head coach
Frank Barnes is named the West Division Coach of the Year for the second straight year after guiding the Warhawks into the NJAC Championship match. His squad is currently 20-2 in dual match action this year.
TCNJ head coach
Scott Dicheck was named East Division Coach of the Year. Dicheck has led the Lions to a 13-2 overall mark and 3-0 record in East Division play in 2021. In 22 seasons in Ewing, Dicheck has compiled a 221-96 men's tennis career record.
