TCNJ Crowned NJAC East Division Champs

EWING, N.J. – On senior day, the TCNJ men's tennis team dominated conference rival NJCU, 7-2, for the NJAC East Division Regular Season Crown Sunday.

Prior to the match, the Lions (11-3, 4-0 NJAC) honored the five members of the 2022-23 senior class: Nikola Kilibarda, Nick Matkiwsky, Rahul Panoli, Akul Telluri and Jacob Quijano.

Doubles action saw the No. 14 regionally-ranked duo of Matthew Michibata and Harrison Maitland-Carter come out on top in their No. 1 matchup, 8-5, over the NJCU pairing of Nico Teynie and Alejandro Ley.

The Lions duo of Jacob Quijano and Alberto Thomas cruised past their No. 3 matchup in an 8-0 sweep.

The Gothic Knights (10-7, 3-1 NJAC) would narrowly avoid the doubles sweep in No. 2 court after the duo of Joaquin Pluis and Jordi Julia clinched the tiebreaker, 7-2, to overcome TCNJ's Matkiwsky and Telluri.

Singles play was highlighted by the Regionally-ranked battle in No. 1 court between TCNJ's Michibata (No. 14) and NJCU's Teynie (#24). After a hard fought two sets, the Lions star came out on top 6-4, 6-4.

Adrian Tsui needed a third-set tiebreaker to win his match on No. 2 court. After winning 6-2 in set one, NJCU's Alejandro Ley would tie the match with a 6-2 victory of his own. Tsui would edge out the Gothic Knight, 10-6, in the tiebreaker.

TCNJ cruised through No. 3 singles after Harrison Maitland-Carter lost just two games in his match. No. 5 singles proved similarly dominant as Derek Jordan lost three total games in the two sets. With his win, Derek would officially clinch the match.

Freshman Brett Schuster took care of business in No. 6 singles. After a hard fought 6-4 victory in the first set, Schuster would cruise through set two 6-2.

NJCU narrowly avoided the sweep in singles action when Pedro Caro clutched out a third-set tiebreaker, 10-8, over Alberto Thomas for the win. Thomas won the first set 6-2, before losing 3-6 in set two.

With their now second straight NJAC East Division title, the Lions will officially take on No. 23 UW-Whitewater next Sunday for the NJAC Championship. The matchup will be a rematch of last year's championship match, in which Whitewater came out on top.
