EWING, NJ --- The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's tennis team defeated The College of New Jersey 5-2 to claim the New Jersey Athletic Conference title for the second consecutive season. With the championship, the Warhawks claim the league's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III tournament.
UWW will compete in a NCAA Regional at a location yet to be announced next week. The full Division III tournament field will be announced Monday at 11:30 a.m. UW-Whitewater will make its 14th postseason appearance in the last 16 seasons.
The Warhawks won the NJAC West Division for the third straight season to advance to the league championship that was contest in New Jersey Sunday. The title match was played to decision with all singles bouts abandoned once UWW recorded its fifth point of the match.
Doubles play was tightly contested with UW-Whitewater taking two of the three flights. Luke VanDonslear paired with John Zakowski to take down Matthew Michibata and Harrison Maitland-Carter 8-7(5) in the No. 1 flight. At No. 2, Cole Lindwall and Tyler Nelson captured a second win for UWW defeating Nick Matkiwsky and Akul Telluri 8-3.
TCNJ got on the board following the longest doubles match of the day as Nikola Kilibara and Alberto Thomas topped Payton Adkisson and Parker Hearne 8-7(8). TCNJ would tie the match 2-2 as the first singles match went final. Thomas defeated UWW's Nelson at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-4.
The next three singles bouts to go final ended with Warhawk wins. VanDonslear defeated Adrian Tsui 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2. Zakowski took down Michibata 7-6(7-2), 6-4 at No. 1 in a final that came in just two minutes later. The match-deciding flight was at No. 3. Lindwall and Maitland-Carter went nearly two hours with Lindwall picking up the win 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(7-4).
