PITMAN, NJ --- The College of New Jersey senior Matthew Michibata (Princeton Junction, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro South) and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater senior John Zakowski (Green Bay, WI/Southwest) have been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Men’s Tennis East and West Players of the Year, respectively, for the 2023 season. Their selections highlight the 17-member NJAC Men’s Tennis All-Conference Team, announced May 2.
Additionally, TCNJ freshman Harrison Maitland-Carter (Toronto, ON/Saddlebrook Prep (FL)) and UW-Whitewater freshman Tyler Nelson (Waunakee, WI/Waunakee) have been tabbed Rookies of the Year for their respective divisions.
Michibata went 2-0 in NJAC singles play and teamed up with Maitland-Carter for a 2-0 mark in NJAC doubles play. At the No. 1 singles spot, Michibata went 13-4 overall and he and Maitland-Carter went 13-6 overall at top flight doubles in the regular season. He is now a four-time All-Conference honoree in both singles and doubles.
Zakowski went a combined 4-0 in NJAC play this season, including a 3-0 mark at top flight doubles teamed up with Luke VanDonslear. Zakowski is now a two-time NJAC West Division Player of the Year. He went 16-7 in singles play and 23-10 in doubles play during the regular season.
Maitland-Carter went 3-0 in NJAC singles play between the No. 2 and No. 3 spots and 2-0 teamed with Michibata in top flight doubles action. Primarily playing at the No. 3 singles position, Maitland-Carter posted a 10-7 overall singles record during the regular season while going 13-6 overall with Michibata at No. 1 doubles.
Nelson went a combined 5-0 in NJAC play, including a 3-0 mark at singles and 2-0 in doubles. The freshman compiled a 21-4 overall regular season singles record in his first season in Whitewater, along with 19-6 overall doubles record primarily at the No. 2 spot.
UW-Whitewater head coach Frank Barnes is named the West Division Coach of the Year for the third straight year after guiding the Warhawks to the NJAC West Division title and ultimately the NJAC overall title. His squad is currently 16-5 heading into the NCAA Division III Tournament.
TCNJ head coach Scott Dicheck was named East Division Coach of the Year. Dicheck has led the Lions to an 11-4 dual meet record as the team also captured the NJAC East Division title and spot in the NJAC Championship match.
