JERSEY CITY, NJ --- The first season in action since 1999 was already a special one for NJCU men's tennis, going undefeated in the regular season and earning the top seed in the first-ever NJAC East Division tournament. The Gothic Knights upped the ante, capping off the historic season with the championship title as they defeated TCNJ 5-3 at the Lincoln Park Tennis Courts on Sunday, May 9.
This marked the first NJAC championship win in an outdoor sport since 1972.
The Gothic Knights were up 2-1 after doubles with Toni Cabot and Nico Teynie winning 8-6 at second doubles and Jordi Julia and Alejandro Ley also winning 8-6 at third.
TCNJ's Rahul Panoli posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at sixth singles and teammate Adrian Tsui won 6-0, 6-1 at third singles to put the Lions up 3-2.
NJCU came back with wins from Toni Cabot at fourth singles (6-0, 6-3) and Ley at the No. 5 spot (6-4, 6-1). Teynie, recently named the NJAC Rookie of the Year, clinched the match at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.
With the match clinched, the No. 1 singles duel between TCNJ's Justin Wain and Player of the Year Theo Bourghelle went unfinished. Bourghelle won the first set 6-2 over Justin Wain, but the second set was tied at 4-4 when the match was halted.
