PITMAN, NJ --- New Jersey City University junior Theo Bourghelle (Lesquin, France/LaSalle Lille) and University of Wisconsin-Whitewater sophomore Jake Macey (Southampton, England/King Edwards VI) have been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Men's Tennis East and West Division Players of the Year, respectively, for the 2021 season.
Their selections highlight the 16-member 2021 NJAC Men's Tennis Divisional All-Conference Teams which were announced on May 4.
Additionally, NJCU freshman Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) and UW-Whitewater sophomore Cole Lindwall (Cottage Grove, WI/Monona Grove) were named Rookies of the Year for their respective divisions.
All selections were made by a vote of the league's eight head coaches and were based on conference-only match results.
Bourghelle led the first-year NJCU program to an unblemished NJAC record and the top seed in the upcoming NJAC East Division Tournament. He went 3-0 in top flight singles play and 2-1 in doubles (1-1 at the first doubles spot), including a critical 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win as the Gothic Knights defeated perennial power TCNJ 5-4.
Macey is the first-ever NJAC West Division Player of the Year after UW-Whitewater joined the NJAC as an affiliate member prior to the covid-shortened 2020 season. He went a combined 4-0 in NJAC action at top flight singles and doubles including a match-tying win over UW-Eau Claire to help the Warhawks rally from 3-1 down to win 5-4.
Teynie went a combined 6-0 in singles and doubles to lead NJCU to an unblemished record in its first year as a program. He went 3-0 at No. 2 singles, including a critical three-set tiebreaker victory in the Gothic Knights' 5-4 win over TCNJ. He won two matches at second doubles with teammate Toni Cabot and once at first doubles. Teynie is a four-time weekly honoree, twice named East Player of the Week and twice named East Rookie of the Week.
Lindwall is named the first-ever NJAC West Division Rookie of the Year. In his first full season on the court, he won both of his NJAC singles matches at the No. 3 spot and went 1-1 at third doubles. Lindwall is a four-time weekly award honoree this year, twice named West Player of the Week and twice named West Rookie of the Week.
UW-Whitewater head coach Frank Barnes is named the first-ever NJAC Men's Tennis West Division Coach of the Year after guiding the Warhawks to wins in both NJAC matches this season. His squad is also 10-2 overall this year.
NJCU head coach Nick Margiasso and TCNJ head coach Scott Dicheck were named NJAC Co-Coaches of the Year by their peers.
Margiasso's Gothic Knight team flew onto the scene this year, going 3-0 in NJAC play and 4-1 overall in the program's first year. His team is the top seed in the upcoming NJAC Men's Tennis East Division Tournament. Margiasso coached two players (Bourghelle and Teynie) to major conference awards, and his players own three of the six All-Conference First Team singles awards and two of the three First Team doubles honors.
Dicheck led the Lions with a 5-1 overall mark and 2-1 record in NJAC play in 2021. Three of his players earned First Team All-Conference this season as well as his top flight doubles team. In 21 seasons in Ewing, Dicheck has compiled a 208-94 men's tennis career record.
