BRUNSWICK, Maine – The TCNJ women's tennis team saw its season come to an end Saturday with a 4-0 loss to No. 8 Bowdoin in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
The 54
th-ranked Lions finished the year with an overall record of 13-7, extending their streak of NJAC championships to 42 and winning an NCAA first-round match for the 18
th consecutive campaign.
Host Bowdoin (16-5) advances to the regional final to take on No. 7 MIT on Sunday.
DOUBLES
- The Polar Bears made short work of doubles with matching 6-1 victories on the second and third courts
- Zoey Albert and Shruti Mannan fell just short of a signature victory, leading 5-3 on the top court against Caroline Stuhlfaut and Jamilah Karah
SINGLES
- Bowdoin picked up convincing wins at No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 to clinch the match
- Albert took Cara Hung to a tiebreaker on the top court, eventually dropping a 7-6 (2) marathon first set
- Aira Abalos conceded the first set, 6-3, to Stuhlfaut but was leading 1-0 in the second at match's end
- Gabrielle Brideau was in the midst of a big turnaround at No. 6, leading 3-2 in the second set over Marie Frati after suffering a 6-0 defeat in the first frame
NOTES
- Abalos, the Lions' lone senior, ended her career with 136 victories, good for ninth in school history; her 78 doubles wins rank 4th all-time
- Albert and Mannan did not lose a single doubles match in a dual this season, and Mannan was 23-1 overall in doubles play
- TCNJ is 0-3 all-time against Bowdoin, the most recent meeting before Saturday coming in the NCAA Tournament second round in 2011
