PITMAN --- The New Jersey Athletic Conference has announced its men's volleyball weekly honors for the week ending April 11.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
JONATHAN ANDREWS • New Jersey City University
Senior • Outside Hitter • North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen
Andrews is named NJAC Player of the Week after returning from injury to lead the Gothic Knights to their first-ever conference title in program history, as well as NJCU’s first-ever bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. After not having played since March 7, Andrews made his return by playing one set in the semifinals against Sarah Lawrence to get back into the swing of things and was extremely efficient against the Gryphons. He was 6-for-7 with one error on attack attempts (.714 hitting pct.) and added three digs and two total blocks. In the championship match, he led all players with a career-best 26 kills on 54 swings with eight errors (.333) to go with nine digs and two assists. This was the only time all season a Gothic Knight had 20-plus kills and, despite playing in half the matches as most of his teammates, Andrews heads into NCAAs tied for the team lead in total kills (48).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
BRANDON DaSILVA • New Jersey City University
Sophomore • Middle Blocker • Kearny, NJ/Kearny
DaSilva earns NJAC Defensive Player of the Week after getting the nod on the front row for the Skyline Championship tilt against St. Joe’s-L.I. He proceeded to lead all players with a career-high-tying eight total blocks to go with three digs and a career-best 11 kills on 25 swings with four errors (.280 hitting pct.). The win gives NJCU its first-ever conference title of any kind as the Gothic Knights head to NCAAs for the first time in program history.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
HANEL COLLADO • New Jersey City University
Sophomore • Outside Hitter • North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen
Collado earns NJAC Rookie of the Week honors after helping lead NJCU to the Skyline Championship title and first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament. The first-year Gothic Knight got the start on the outside in the championship contest against St. Joe’s, and proceeded to notch a career-best 12 kills — second highest on the team — on 31 swings with six errors (.194) and added two digs, two total blocks and an assist.
