Class of 2020 Spotlight: Stockton Softball

The New Jersey Athletic Conference honors the seniors across all of our spring sports who had their seasons painfully cut short by the global pandemic, but whose dedication, perseverance, and passion for their sport, their academics, and their institution over the last four years was nothing short of admirable. Thank You Seniors, and congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 2020!

ALEXANDRA COSENZO

"Alex made an immediate impact in our lineup and within our team starting as a freshman.  In just three seasons, she has broken both the single season and career records for home runs and RBI.  She leaves our program as one of the best power hitters to play at Stockton.  Most importantly beyond the numbers, Alex has always worked past any obstacle with a huge smile, positive attitude and tireless work ethic.   Her typical response to me when things got tough was “we got this”.  That’s the kind of player and teammate she is, which is why she has been such a huge part of this team and the growth of our program."

MEGAN KATZMAR

"Coaches talk all of the time about understanding your role on the team and how important each player's role is to the success of the program.  Katzmar is the greatest example I can think of when it comes to a player not only accepting her role, but embracing it.  She worked her way in to the lineup coming in at key spots to hit and has led the NJAC in pinch hits for the last two seasons.  She prepares every day as a starter, works tirelessly in the gym, takes extra reps and is always cheering on her teammates. Meg’s excitement and passion for Stockton softball has made her an invaluable asset to our program."

ASHLEY LOBELL

"Ash is by far one of the toughest players I have ever coached.  She came in as an infielder and sophomore year we moved her to the outfield. From that point on making diving catches and throwing runners out at the plate became routine for her.  It didn’t matter if it was a game, scrimmage, practice or extra reps after everyone had left the field, Ash was going to dive after every ball.  Pretty much by the end of every practice for the last four seasons, Ash was covered in dirt, bleeding, scratched or bruised.  Going all out on every play is the only way she knows."

MEG MURZELLO

"Meg is one of the most versatile and focused players I’ve ever coached. Her willingness to play anywhere we needed her without hesitation helped our team tremendously over the last two seasons.  Meg is a leader and true competitor who leads by example in every aspect of life.  Her impact on our team was immediate from day one.  My proud coach moment came when Meg was named First Team All-East Region. It wasn’t about the accolade, it’s watching a player transfer in to our program and regain confidence and the love for the game again.  Since that time Meg has continued to share her passion and commitment to Stockton softball with everyone she’s around."

LIANI ORTIZ

"One of the greatest things about coaching Liani is that she is always one of the smartest players on the field.  Her softball IQ and ability to communicate with teammates and coaches is remarkable.  She has grown so much as a player and as a person over the last two seasons.  As a coach it’s so rewarding to see a kid that almost walked away from this sport, make her way to the starting lineup, make all NJAC, and become one of the top players and leaders of our program."

NICOLE PETROVICH

"Even though her playing time got derailed by injury, Petro has been such an important part of our program.  On the field she uses her knowledge of the game to help groom and build confidence in her teammates. A four year member of our program, Petro represents not just the softball team at Stockton, but also the campus and community.  She is our SAAC rep, a 4.0 student and President of Stockton Unified Sports.  Petro’s well-rounded involvement defines the Division III student-athlete."
