PITMAN—The NCAA and the ECAC announced on November 7 that 21 NJAC fall sport teams have been selected to participate in postseason play, including 11 NJAC teams that will compete for NCAA Division III National Championships.
In addition to the league’s NCAA automatic bids in men’s soccer, women’s soccer, field hockey, and women’s volleyball, the conference received seven additional at-large bids in the four sports combined, sending at least two league teams to each of the four NCAA Tournaments.
The excitement started late on November 6 when Montclair State received an at-large bid to the NCAA field hockey tournament. When the Red Hawks later received an at-large bid to the NCAA women’s soccer tournament on November 7, MSU became the only NJAC program to secure NCAA berths in each of the four NCAA fall tournaments.
In men’s soccer, the league placed four teams in the tournament, with both Rowan and Rutgers-Newark selected to host. Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day was the men’s soccer at-large selection received by Kean, marking the first time that an NJAC program has received an NCAA berth despite not participating in the NJAC Tournament.
In women’s soccer, TCNJ was selected to host, while the bracket shows revealed that Christopher Newport will be the first round NCAA opponent of both the Rowan women’s soccer team and the Montclair State men’s soccer program. CNU is an NJAC associate member in the sport of football and a conference opponent of both Rowan and MSU on the gridiron.
In women’s volleyball, Ramapo became the first team in league history to receive an NCAA at-large bid. Both the Roadrunners and NJAC champion Red Hawks will have a short commute to Hoboken for NCAA Tournament play being hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology.
In addition to the NCAA participating teams, 10 NJAC teams were also selected to participate in the newly revamped fall ECAC Championship Tournaments. Under the new ECAC format, teams are assigned to various regions, resulting in the regional winners advancing to compete for overall ECAC Championships in each sport.
