Field Hockey

Student-Athlete Spotlight: Karlee Henderson, Rowan University

There’s no doubt the NJAC boasts some extremely talented athletes but we want fans to know that there’s more to these athletes than just their accomplishments on the field, court, etc. The NJAC Student-Athlete Spotlight highlights one student-athlete each Friday.

The NJAC Student-Athlete Spotlight this week comes from Rowan University. A senior field hockey player from Elmer, NJ, Karlee Henderson is currently pursuing a dual degree in Biology and Biochemistry.

Name: Karlee Henderson
Instituion: Rowan University
Year: Senior
Sport: Field Hockey
Hometown, State: Elmer, NJ
High School: Woodstown High School
Major: Biology and Biochemistry dual major

What made you choose your institution?
It’s location, growing reputation, and affordable tuition is what made Rowan so appealing to me.

What made you want to become a DIII collegiate athlete?
I wanted to be able to compete at a high level, while maintaining a high GPA and extracurricular involvement on campus

What was your first memory of playing your sport?
My mom started a 5th-8th grade field hockey program at my school when I was in 4th grade, I would practice with the team but couldn't play in games until I was in 5th grade. I had a tiny wooden stick and an instant love for the sport. After having watched my mom play every weekend, I knew it was something I would also love and play for many many years to come.

What has been the greatest or most memorable moment of your experience as a collegiate athlete?
I have so many great memories thanks to DIII athletics at Rowan, but I would have to say my most memorable experience was scoring the game-winning goal, off of a corner, during my sophomore year, on my birthday! The entire team ran out on the field to celebrate, that was pretty exciting.

Do you have any pre-game rituals? If so, what are they?
Just starting this year, at home games I always grab the talons of the Bronze Owl outside our team house. The team follows behind, one after another, to touch the Owl.

What famous athlete do you look up to and why?
There are many professional athletes that I admire, not only for their determination and resilience in athletics, but also their life choices. I have a great deal of respect for those who use their success and fame to reach out to others less fortunate and aid in charitable efforts.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Just graduated from medical school and entering a residency program at a reputable children's hospital (possibly the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where my sister was treated for cancer).

What is your favorite part about being an NJAC student-athlete?
Being part of a team of student-athletes that care about each other and love field hockey as much as I do is very fulfilling. I thrive off of competition and realize that this is the most dedicated and strong field hockey program that I will be a part of in my lifetime, so I try to enjoy every minute of it and leave with very few regrets.

What is your biggest accomplishment OFF the field, court, etc.?
Off the field you can find me neck deep in my studies, micromanaging clubs, or organizing charity events. However, I wouldn't say that I am the most proud of my academic or extracurricular accomplishments in my life. From painting portraits, to hiking up the tallest mountain on the east coast, I love involving myself in a variety of experiences. I personally believe my biggest accomplishment has been maintaining a healthy, positive lifestyle, while involving myself in a multitude of experiences that have given me unique perspectives and have allowed me to find fulfilment and enjoyment throughout my life.
