TCNJ Earns First Round Win Over Ramapo, 7-1

EWING, NJ --- The College of New Jersey softball team scored seven runs off of eight hits to earn a 7-1 win over Ramapo College in first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference tournament.
 
The Lions capitalized on several Roadrunner errors to score three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead.
 
TCNJ increased their lead to 6-0 in the third inning, highlighted by doubles by Jamie Purcell and Jess McGuire, and a two-run homerun by Jess Santelli.
 
In the fifth inning, the Lions added one more run to make the score 7-0. Colleen Phelan pinch hit and made it on base when she was hit by a pitch. Daniella Marino reentered as a base runner and advanced to second when Steph Vuono walked. Deanna Utter hit a single to right field to send Marino home.
 
Ramapo scored their lone run in the top of the seventh inning. Back-to-back walks to Ally Spellman and pinch hitter Shannon Cox started the inning before Danielle Saportio re-entered for Cox. Both runners moved up one base on a wild pitch before Mikayla Melendez ripped a double to center field plating Spellman. TCNJ got out of the jam recording the final two outs without letting another run to score.
 
Sam Platt earned her 16th victory of the season on the mound. She allowed only five hits and struck out three batters. Christina Brizek (12-5) took the loss for the Roadrunners with three walks while she scattered six hits and six runs (three earned).
