GLASSBORO, NJ – The Rowan University softball team won 4-0 over Kean University in the first round of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Championship on Wednesday.
The Profs (33-8) play the fourth seed Ramapo College (21-14) on Friday at 1 p.m. The Roadrunners lost in the first round to the third seed The College of New Jersey, 7-1. The other first round game between the second seed Stockton University and the fifth seed Rutgers-Camden was moved to Thursday, May 5.
Rowan will host the remainder of the double elimination tournament on Friday-Sunday, May 6-8. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for students, senior citizens and children. The conference champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament.
Right-hander Beth Ann Hyland (19-4) pitched a complete game for the shutout. She only allowed two hits while striking out 11 batters. Righty Shannon McMahon had the loss.
Left fielder Mia Baldassari led the Profs with two hits (four at bats), a double, two RBIs and one run. Shortstop Shilah Snead contributed with three hits and one run. Center fielder Gianna Genello chipped in with two hits, one RBI and one run. Second baseman Carly Anderson added two hits in three at bats and scored one run.
For Kean, second baseman Emily Sabo was two for three with a double.
Rowan had a 1-0 lead after a RBI single by Genello in the second inning. She drove in Anderson who led off with a base hit to left field. With two outs in the sixth, Genello reached base on a single. Snead followed with a singled to left center. Baldassari plated Genello and Snead with a double to left field. DeYoung produced a RBI single, scoring Baldassari.
