2024 NCAA Super Regional

GLASSBORO, NJ -- #13 Rowan advanced to the Division III Championship Series for the second year in a row as the Profs won two games over #3 Christopher Newport capping off the best-of-three super regional here in Glassboro on Friday. Emily McCutcheon tossed a one-hit shutout in Friday's first game, a 2-0 win over the Captains, to set up a winner-take-all game 3 in which the Profs were victorious, 6-2, to punch its ticket back to Texas.

Eight Super Regional winners will head to East Texas Baptist University, the site for the national finals, that begin on Thursday, May 30th. Pairings and the championship schedule will be posted once it becomes available.

McCutcheon was named the most valuable pitcher and Zara MacNair was chosen the most valuable player of the NCAA Super Regional.

In Friday's first game, McCutcheon threw five innings of no-hit ball, before a lead-off single in the sixth broke up the bid to raise her record to 20-1 and shutout Christopher Newport for the first time this season. The Profs got a key two-out RBI single from Abigail Pawlowski in the fourth and later a two-out infield hit from Breanna Bryant to pace the offense.

After stranding a runner on third to end the first and fourth innings, McCutcheon had her biggest task come in the sixth as CNU put runners on second and third with just one out. She would get a big strikeout followed by a grounder to Bryant at third to move things along to the bottom half.

In that sixth, Pawlowski scored pinch runner Ally Reim from second on a blooper down the left field line with two down. Reim made a nice play at the plate, sliding just under the throw home for a 1-0 edge.

Payton MacNair led off the bottom of the sixth with a single up the middle. Two batters later, McKenzie Melvin struck out swinging, but the pitch got away from the catcher, allowing MacNair to race around all the way to third. Now with two outs, Bryant would beat out a groundball to short to plate MacNair and give McCutcheon some breathing room.

Candace Slaw had the lone hit for the Captains while teammate Kate Alger struck out six with one walk, giving up the two runs (one earned) on six hits.

Pawlowski and MacNair each had two hits for Rowan.

The winner-take-all game did not get off to the start the Profs were hoping, as Christopher Newport took advantage of two Rowan errors to score two unearned runs in the first.

Zara MacNair cut the deficit in half with her RBI double in the third, battling through a 13-pitch at-bat. With Pawlowski on first and the defense on a shift towards left field, the freshman pulled a ball on the ground to a wide open right field where Pawlowski easily made it home to make it a 2-1 game.

CNU scored another unearned run in the fourth, coming off an error at short to allow Brenna Morefield to score.

Bryant countered in the bottom half of the frame with her slap single to left to plate pinch runner Hannah Bryszewski to keep it a one-run contest.

Rowan took the lead for good in the fifth thanks to RBI hits from McCaffery, Kate Evick, and Payton MacNair. After McCaffery's two-bagger to score Zara MacNair and knot it up at 3-3, Evick delivered a huge pinch-hit double off the fence in left to put the Profs on top for the first time. Payton MacNair put the finishing touches in the inning with her RBI single for a 5-3 advantage.

Rylee Lutz came on for McCutcheon to start the fourth, and would get 1-2-3 innings in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to lock up the Profs' trip to Texas.

Lutz yielded the one unearned run on just one walk and zero hits, while adding a strikeout to improve to 19-7 on the season.

Zara MacNair finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Kaitlyn Riggs added two hits as well.

This will be the eighth time in program history that Rowan heads to the championship finals. The Profs finished in fifth place last year, defeating the eventual national champion Trine in its first game, before falling to Coe and Salisbury.
