Rutgers-Newark Recognized as 2024 NJAC Men's Volleyball Champions

NEWARK—The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team was honored as the 2024 NJAC champions in a ceremony which was conducted at the Golden Dome Athletic Center on April 1.

In the New Jersey Athletic Conference, men's volleyball is one of just two sports (football being the other) in which the league title is awarded to the team with the best record in conference regular season play. With only four men's volleyball sponsoring institutions, each program engages in a three-game NJAC schedule each season.

Rutgers-Newark concluded its NJAC season with a 2-1 league record, as did Kean. But with a 3-1 set victory over the Cougars on March 27, Newark would claim the NJAC title in a two-way tie based on that head-to-head result.

NJCU currently has a 1-1 record in NJAC play with one conference match remaining (vs. Ramapo). An NJCU victory in that match would result in a three-way tie atop the NJAC standings at 2-1 between Rutgers-Newark, Kean, and NJCU.

If the conference race were to finish in a three-way tie, Rutgers-Newark would win every conceivable tiebreaker (either conference set percentage against all league teams, or conference point differential among tied teams).

With Rutgers-Newark holding tiebreakers regardless of whether a two-way tie or a three-way tie were to occur, the Scarlet Raiders have been declared NJAC champions for the 2024 season, giving the program its fourth consecutive NJAC title in the five seasons that men's volleyball has been sponsored by the NJAC.
