PITMAN --- The New Jersey Athletic Conference has announced its women's basketball weekly honors for the week ending Jan. 15.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
DAMARIS RODRIGUEZ • New Jersey City University
Junior • Guard • Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus
Rodriguez collects her second straight and third overall NJAC Player of the Week honor after leading NJCU to a pair of NJAC victories, including a thrilling buzzer beater on Saturday. She averaged 24.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 7.5 assists over 38.1 minutes per game and is now just eight points away from 1,000 for her career. She began with game-highs in points (21), assists (9) and rebounds (8) in Wednesday’s road 70-51 win at Rutgers-Camden. Then, in Saturday’s buzzer-beating 59-56 win over Stockton, Rodriguez again led all players in points (28) and assists (6) and had a team-high in rebounds (8). With time set to expire, Rodriguez got the ball baseline and drained the game-winner (and drew the foul and made the shot). She currently leads the NJAC in conference-only scoring (21.4 ppg), conference-only assists (6.8 apg), conference-only assist-to-turnover ratio (1.8), and conference-only free throw percentage (95.2%).
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
RENEE WELLS • William Paterson University
Freshman • Leonardo, NJ/Middletown South
Wells earns her third straight and fifth overall NJAC Rookie of the Week honors after helping William Paterson win two more conference games last week. Wells averaged 10.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game in the two victories. In a 54-50 home win against first-place Ramapo on Jan. 11, she scored eight points and reeled in a career-high 11 rebounds while dishing out three assists. She followed that performance up with a 13-point outing on 4-of-8 (.500) shooting in a 67-53 road victory at Rutgers-Camden on Jan. 14. She added five rebounds, two steals and a career-high five assists opposite the Scarlet Raptors. Wells leads all NJAC rookies in scoring, averaging 10.7 points per game against conference opponents.
