Montclair State Sweeps Major Women's Soccer Awards; All-Conference Announced

PITMAN, NJ --- Montclair State University sophomore forward Sofia Ambrosio (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) and junior back Lexington Wolf (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) have been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year respectively for the Spring 2021 season.

The pair headlined an all-Red Hawk slate of major awards. Catherine Carnevale (Princeton Junction, NJ/Pennington School) was named Midfielder of the Year; Phoebe Bledsoe (West Caldwell, NJ/Caldwell) is Goalkeeper of the Year; Aileen Cahill (Little Egg Harbor, NJ/Pinelands Regional) is Rookie of the Year; and head coach Patrick Naughter was tabbed Coach of the Year.

In total, 34 student-athletes earned all-conference recognition in NJAC women’s soccer during the modified Spring 2021 season. All selections and major awards were determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.

A sophomore transfer, Ambrosio was the conference’s leading scorer, pacing the Red Hawks with three goals in seven matches. She tallied her first goal as a Red Hawk in a win over Kean and scored two more in a win over William Paterson. The MSU offense outshot opponents 145-34.

Wolf claimed the Defensive Player of the Year honor after anchoring the MSU back line to five shutouts in seven matches this season, including a shutout in the NJAC championship game as the Red Hawks claimed their first title since 2014. Wolf and the MSU defense held opponents to 34 total shots (4.9 per game) and only yielded two goals for a team goals against average of 0.20.

Carnevale is now a four-year NJAC All-Conference honoree. The senior holding midfielder was a large component helping MSU limit opponents to just 34 total shots across seven matches. She scored one goal and assisted on another this season. In four seasons at Montclair State, Carnevale started 61 of 64 career matches and recorded six points on two goals and two assists.

Bledsoe, a two-time NJAC All-Conference goalkeeper, went 5-0-2 in her senior season and posted five shutouts while giving up just two goals. She sported a conference-best 0.28 goals against average and was best among NJAC starting keepers with a .900 save percentage.
Cahill came in as a rookie and made an immediate impact. The two-time NJAC Rookie of the Week was second on the Red Hawk squad with five points on two goals and an assist. Both of her goals were game winners, which was best among all conference players.

Montclair State University head coach Patrick Naughter was selected as the NJAC Coach of the Year by his peers for the second straight season and fourth time in his career. He also earned back-to-back honors in 2012 and 2013. He guided his squad to a 5-0-2 record and the fourth NJAC title in program history. He coached all five major award winners and seven total all-conference honorees this year. In 11 years at the helm of the MSU program, Naughter has guided the Red Hawks to an overall record of 142-40-30.
