GLASSBORO--New Jersey City University senior guard Marajiah Bacon broke the New Jersey Athletic Conference all-time record for career women’s basketball scoring in a road contest at Rowan on January 19. Her three-point field goal with 1:03 remaining in the third quarter topped the previous record which had stood for over 27 seasons.
Bacon, who started the day in fourth-place on the all-time NJAC scoring list with 2,021 points, was able to pass all three of the individuals above her in what was just her 86th career game played. First up was Val Brown (2,027), who played at Stockton from 1981-85, whom Bacon passed at the 0:33 mark of the first quarter. Next up was Melissa Tobie (2,041), who played at Montclair State from 2011-15, whom Bacon passed with a free throw at the 6:47 mark in the third quarter.
Bacon then became the league’s all-time leading career scorer when she passed William Paterson’s Michelle Jones (2,048) who played from 1987-91. Bacon finished the contest with 31 points on 6-of-11 three-point shooting and 10-24 field goals (5-of-7 free throws) with 11 rebounds and four steals in 37 minutes of action.
With a minimum of seven games remaining for the Gothic Knights, Bacon currently holds the all-time NJAC women’s basketball career scoring record with 2,052 points as of January 19.
