NEWARK–Jason Madsen has been named the new head women's volleyball head coach at Rutgers-Newark by Director of Athletics Mark Griffin on May 5. Madsen, who joined the staff of the Scarlet Raider men's volleyball first-year head coach Pedro Trevino in the fall, moves to the head position for women's volleyball. Trevino will now serve as Madsen's associated head coach for the women's squad.
Madsen served as assistant coach at St. Joseph's High School in Metuchen from 200 through 2011, helping the boys program to state titles in 2006 and 2008, as well as sectional titles in 2010 and 2011.
Born, raised and currently living in Plainfield, Madsen was an all-county and second-team all-state performer in volleyball at St. Joseph's before playing one varsity season at Ramapo College.
Madsen earned a bachelor of arts in communications from Richard Stockton College in 2009 and added a master's in sports administration from Fairleigh Dickinson in 2011.
Madsen replaces Joshua Coffing who led the women's volleyball squad to an 8-19 record in his first year at the helm.
