JERSEY CITY, NJ --- Marc Della Volpe, who served as assistant softball coach at New Jersey City University in 2016 and 2017, has been elevated to head coach of the Gothic Knight program.
Della Volpe becomes the 16th head coach in the program's 38-year history, succeeding Veronica Grant who resigned this summer after three years with the program—the last two as head coach. Della Volpe is just the fourth to serve as the program's head coach in a full-time capacity.
In his first two years with the Gothic Knights, NJCU reached double digits in victories in each season and the 2017 season culminated with an upset of #20 ranked William Paterson. Della Volpe helped run NJCU's practice sessions and he handled pitching coach responsibilities in 2017.
Della Volpe came to NJCU with 11 years of collegiate experience as an assistant coach at the Division I and II levels. He spent four seasons as assistant at Fordham University from 2001-2004 and was part of the 2002 Atlantic 10 Coaching Staff of the Year. He moved to Manhattan College where he was an assistant for three years from 2004-06.
Most recently, Della Volpe spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Division II Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. from 2010-2014. During his five seasons, the Mavericks produced 20 National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Scholar Athletes and 26 East Coast Conference (ECC) Honor Roll recipients, including a department-high 15 in 2013. Meanwhile, the Mavericks reached the 2013 ECC conference tournament and its 26 victories that season were the program's most since 1987 (22). It set single-season records for hits (426) and RBIs (198).
With Mercy, he was involved in four community service projects, including a winter youth softball clinic and Operation Clean Sweep in Dobbs Ferry, and served as support staff for volleyball and basketball home games.
Della Volpe left Manhattan to become a high school head coach at Montclair Kimberley Academy for two seasons (2006-08) where he led the Cougars to its eighth consecutive Non-Public B state championship and the North B state title in 2007. The program again reached the 2008 Non-Public B championship game before falling. MKA won its ninth and 10th consecutive Colonial Hills Conference championship in 2007 and 2008.
Della Volpe got his start in coaching softball as an assistant coach for the NJ Pride club program for four years from 1998-2001.
Della Volpe holds a 2002 degree in business from Belford University and is a 1994 alumnus of Belleville High School in Belleville, N.J. where he played baseball and wrestled for the Buccaneers.
Born in November, 1976, Della Volpe, 40, resides in Nutley, N.J. with his wife Jessica and two children—Louis (8) and Cara (4).
