MAHWAH, N.J. — Ramapo College Director of Athletics Marie Curran announced Tuesday the hiring of Nina Stone as interim head women's basketball coach. Stone brings a wealth of experience to the Roadrunners program as a former professional basketball player, NCAA Division I coach, and player development specialist.
"Nina Stone is the right leader for this moment. She brings stability, energy, and an unwavering commitment to our student-athletes, both on the court and in the classroom. She knows the game, earns her players' trust, and shares our vision of a program built to compete for NJAC championships. I'm confident in her, and I can't wait to watch this team take the floor under her leadership," Curran said.
Stone began her coaching career at the NCAA Division I level as an assistant coach at Oral Roberts University from 2007 to 2008. During her tenure, she contributed to player development, recruiting, scouting, and on-court instruction. She was also part of a coaching staff that captured a conference tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where Oral Roberts faced the University of Tennessee.
Her coaching experience also includes stops at Daytona Beach State College, Indian River State College, and Georgian Court University, where she served as an assistant women's basketball coach during the 2024–25 season. Additionally, Stone has spent 13 years coaching and developing athletes in the women's semi-professional basketball ranks, contributing to championship-winning programs in 2019 and 2022.
A former standout collegiate player, Stone competed at Wabash Valley College, where the program was nationally ranked. Her performance earned her NJCAA All-American honors and recognition as one of the nation's top 10 guards. She continued her playing career at Oklahoma State University, competing at the NCAA Division I level and earning Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors, along with Big 12 honorable mention recognition.
Following her collegiate career, Stone pursued professional basketball opportunities in the United States and internationally. In 2008, she signed a one-year contract with the WNBA's Chicago Sky before continuing her professional playing career overseas in Israel and Puerto Rico. Her experiences at the collegiate and professional levels helped shape her approach to leadership, preparation, perseverance, and player development.
"Basketball has been a major part of my life, and being able to share my experiences as a former collegiate and professional player with the next generation is incredibly meaningful to me," Stone said. "I'm beyond excited and truly honored to have the opportunity to lead the Ramapo program. I'm looking forward to building meaningful relationships, establishing our identity, and creating a culture that our student-athletes and the entire Ramapo community can be proud of."
At Ramapo, Stone aims to build a competitive program grounded in accountability, discipline, hard work, mental toughness, and unity. Her philosophy extends beyond wins and losses, emphasizing the importance of developing confident, resilient young women who are prepared to succeed in basketball, academics, and life. Through mentorship, high standards, and a commitment to student-athlete well-being, she is focused on creating an environment where every player feels supported, challenged, and empowered to reach her full potential.
Stone becomes the ninth head coach in the history of the Ramapo women's basketball program.
"As we enter this upcoming season, I'm excited to get to work with our student-athletes and lay the foundation for sustained success. Of course, we want to compete and win, but I also want our players to understand that their growth as people is just as important as their development as athletes. My vision is to create an environment where our student-athletes can thrive both on and off the court," Stone added.
