Rowan, TCNJ, Stockton Women in Top 3 After Day 1 of NJAC Outdoor Championships

EWING, NJ --- Behind three event wins on Saturday, Rowan sits in the lead after the first day of the NJAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The Profs picked up 87 points to top the leaderboard. TCNJ sits in second with 72.5 points and Stockton third with 47 points. 

Rowan athletes earned three gold, two silver, and two bronze medals in Saturday's event finals, including a podium sweep in the 3000 meter steeplechase. TCNJ also won a slew of medals including two gold, three silver, and a bronze.

Anna Sasse led the Profs' steeplechase trio with a winning time of 11:32.70, with Gabriella Pagano just behind in 11:32.89 and Emily Zanni in third (11:38.23). 

Rowan's Sidney Whetstone won the long jump with a leap of 5.53 meters and teammate Rhi'Onna Timmons finished second with a mark of 5.48 meters. NJCU's Tonna Ogina earned bronze with a 5.41 meter leap.

Rowan's Izzy Deal won javelin gold with a heave of 39.17 meters. TCNJ went 2-3 in the javelin with Lily Lorio throwing a 37.45 and Annalise Stephens a 37.20.

TCNJ's Kerri McCarthy posted a top-25 mark in NCAA Division III with her winning hammer throw of 52.06 meters. Her mark ranks 22nd nationally. She was joined on the podium by teammate Jessica Reilly (50.08 meters) and Rutgers-Newark's Fejiro Akiri (45.72 meters).

TCNJ's Cassidy Quinn won gold in the 10,000 meters, clocking in at 39:05.44. Stockton's Madelyn Valasek earned silver (39:30.67) and Rowan's Shannon Stakelbeck picked up a bronze (39:49.11).

Stockton's Eva Morrison won the pole vault by clearing 3.50 meters. TCNJ's Maya Scannell won silver (3.35 meters) and Stockton's Sydney Rick placed third (3.15 meters).

In the 400 hurdles preliminaries, Rowan's Nyla Jones and Eliza Bruncaj moved up on the D3 qualifying list. Jones turned in the seventh-fastest time in D3 this season with a 1:01.40 and Bruncaj moved up to 27th in D3 with a 1:02.88. Stockton's Emma Petrolia sits in second after the prelims, clocking in at 1:02.36 - that time would rank in the top five nationally, just behind her own 1:02.32 earlier this season.

The NJAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships resume on Sunday morning at TCNJ.
