Salisbury's Wood, With 1988 Football Team, Inducted into Bowie State Hall of Fame

BOWIE, MD – Salisbury University head football coach Sherman Wood has been inducted into the Bowie State University Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1988 Bulldog football team. The induction ceremony was held this past Saturday at the BWI Marriott Hotel in Linthicum Heights, MD.

The lone graduate assistant on the staff of head coach Dave Dolch, Wood coached defensive backs and served as special teams coordinator for a Bowie State team that finished 9-2-1 overall and went 4-1-1 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The Bulldogs qualified for the NCAA Division II Football Championship tournament, becoming the first-ever CIAA school and Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to participate in the then-field of 16, and finished the season with a No. 20 national ranking.

The 1988 season was Wood's third on-staff at BSU. The next year he was promoted to assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, serving in that capacity for three seasons. Wood became the head coach at Bowie State in 1993 after spending the previous year as an assistant at Virginia Union. He led the Bulldogs for six seasons, culminating with a 6-3 mark in 1998 that was the program's best since the historic 1988 run.

Wood arrived at Salisbury from BSU in time for the 1999 campaign and has led the Sea Gulls for 25 seasons. In 31 years as a head coach between BSU and SU, he has amassed a 202-117-1 record, nine conference championships, 19 postseason appearances, 10 NCAA Tournament berths, and six conference coach of the year honors. Wood is one of just eight active head coaches across all NCAA levels with at least 200 career wins.
