Rutgers-Newark's Catania, MSU's Radoncic, Kean's Soumahoro Earn First NJAC Men's Soccer Weekly Honors of 2022

PITMAN, NJ --- The New Jersey Athletic Conference has announced its first men's soccer weekly honors of the 2022 season, with the honors covering performances for the week ending Sept. 5.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
FRANCO CATANIA • Rutgers-Newark
Senior • Forward • Elmwood Park, NJ/Elmwood Park

Catania, the reigning NJAC Offensive Player of the Year, picked right back up and earns the first Offensive Player of the Week honor of the new season. He netted two goals and assisted on a third in Rutgers-Newark’s 4-1 win over Farmingdale State at the TCNJ Men’s Soccer Classic over the weekend. He scored the game’s first goal in the 18th minute and then added an insurance goal to put the Scarlet Raiders up 3-1 just 30 seconds into the second frame. Catania assisted on the game’s final goal in the 81st minute. He currently ranks second in the NJAC with five points.


DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
ENIR RADONCIC • Montclair State University
Sophomore • Back • Aberdeen, NJ/Matawan

Radoncic picks up the first NJAC Defensive Player of the Week honor after proving instrumental in the Red Hawks’ 1-0-2 week, anchoring a backline that surrendered just one goal in 270 minutes. The defender was tabbed as the Turk Emelji Classic Most Valuable Player as he scored the lone goal in the Red Hawk’s 1-0 victory over Oswego State afternoon. He headed in Chris Fontanazza’s corner-kick in the 10th minute for the game’s only marker. Radoncic and the Red Hawk defense limited opponents to a combined eight shots on goal in that three-game span.


ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
SEKOU SOUMAHORO • Kean University
Freshman • Forward • Newark, NJ/West Side

Soumahoro is named the first NJAC Rookie of the Week of the 2022 season after leading Kean to a win over Brooklyn College. In his collegiate debut, Soumahoro registered a hat trick, putting in three goals on five shots. He rattled off three straight goals in a span of less than six minutes in the first half, finding the back of the net in the 33rd, 34th, and 39th minutes to push Kean ahead 5-0 in the eventual 7-0 win. He currently leads the NJAC with six points.
