NJAC Men's Soccer All-Conference Announced

PITMAN, NJ --- Rutgers-Newark senior forward Franco Catania (Elmwood Park, NJ/Elmwood Park) and Ramapo junior back Osbin Mendez (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) have been named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year respectively for the 2022 season.

Additionally, Rowan junior Chad Yates (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) is named the Pat Baldiserra Midfielder of the Year; Montclair State senior Shane Keenan (Hazlet, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) is Goalkeeper of the Year; and Stockton’s Aiden Hoenisch (Bordentown, NJ/Notre Dame) is Rookie of the Year. MSU’s Ian Chesney (Oakland, NJ/Ramapo) earns the David Logar Leadership Award.

In total, 41 student-athletes garnered all-conference recognition. All selections were determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches and are based on performance in conference matches only.

Catania, a back-to-back NJAC Offensive Player of the Year selection, led Rutgers-Newark to a 4-2-3 NJAC record and a berth in the conference tournament. The four-time all-conference selection was the league leader in conference-only points (17), conference-only goals (8), overall goals (16), and overall points (35).

Mendez moved to the Ramapo back line this season and was a pivotal force on a team that finished second in the conference with a 5-2-2 mark. The two-time all-conference pick led a Ramapo squad that held opponents to a 52 percent shot-on-goal percentage and registered three NJAC shutouts.

Yates, a three-time all-conference honoree, finished second in the NJAC in conference-only points (16), tied for third in conference-only assists (4), and sixth in conference-only goals (6). He led Rowan to a 4-2-3 NJAC record, helping the Profs turn around a slow season start to finish with the No. 3 seed in the NJAC Tournament.

Keenan, a three-time all-conference selection and now two-time Goalkeeper of the Year, went 4-0-1 with five shutouts in league play. He posted the NJAC’s best conference-only goals against average (.000) and conference-only save percentage (1.000).

Chesney was the recipient of the conference’s David Logar Leadership Award. The award is presented annually to the player who best displays the attributes of leadership and courage. The sophomore back helped MSU limit conference opponents to just six combined goals (0.67 GAA) and posted six shutouts. He also posed an offensive threat as he was the team’s third-leading scorer overall with 13 points on five goals and three assists.

Hoenisch was selected as the NJAC Rookie of the Year. A Week 6 Rookie of the Week selection, Hoenisch ranked tied for third in the NJAC in conference-only assists (4). He posted five goals and five assists to record 15 points overall on the year.

Montclair State head coach Todd Tumelty and Ramapo head coach DJ Pinton were tapped as the NJAC Co-Coaches of the Year by their peers. Tumelty earned the honor for the fourth time in his career by guiding the Red Hawks to a 14-1-4 overall record, 8-0-1 conference record, and the NJAC regular season title. Pinton earned the honor for the third time after his Roadrunners finished second in the league standings with a 5-2-2 record to outperform their sixth place preseason polling.
