MONTCLAIR, NJ --- Former Montclair State men's soccer midfielder Michael Knapp was drafted to Austin FC during the third round of the Major League Soccer (MLS) SuperDraft 2022 Tuesday.
Knapp was the fifth selection of the third round, going 61st overall to Austin FC. The midfielder played two seasons for the Red Hawks, collecting three goals and seven assists while taking 66 shots in 35 matches spanning the 2018 and 2019 campaigns. He was a two-time First Team All-South Atlantic Region selection and was named First Team All-New Jersey Athletic Conference both years. In 2018, he was tabbed as the NJAC Rookie of the Year before gaining Pat Baldiserra Midfielder of the Year accolades in 2019.
The Bloomfield, NJ native spent the 2021 campaign with the New York Red Bulls II of the United Soccer League. Knapp saw action in 22 games, making 17 starts for the team that plays its home matches at MSU Soccer Park. Knapp won 117 duels and was third on the club with 59 tackles as both a defending and attacking midfielder.
Austin FC is currently entering their second season in MLS after posting a 9-21-4 mark in their inaugural season last year.
