Marc Brown Selected as Top 5 Division III Men’s Basketball Coach by MCA

JERSEY CITY, N.J. --- New Jersey City University head men's basketball coach Marc Brown has been selected as one of the Top 5 Division III head men's basketball coaches in the country by the Minority Coaches Association (MCA).

Brown, entering what will be an abbreviated 14th season at the helm of the Gothic Knights this season — which is slated to kick off in January — was named the 2019 New Jersey Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for the third time in seven seasons. He owns a 210-144 career record and is the second winningest coach in program history, behind only his father, Charlie Brown (483 wins). Together they are the winningest father-son combo at one school in Division III history.

Brown was voted NJAC Coach of the Year in 2013, 2016 and 2019. Brown is a two-time Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2019 and the 2011 D3hoops.com Atlantic Region Coach of the Year.

Brown discovered Sam Toney, who would go on to become a two-time All-American, two-time NJAC Player of the Year and the 2019 NJAC Male Athlete of the Year during a four-year career (2016-20) where he became the fourth leading scorer in NJCU history. In April 2020, Toney became the first Division III male to ever be selected winner of the "Most Courageous Award" by the United States Basketball Writers Association. Brown has coached three NJAC Defensive Player of the Year winners (2012, 2016, 2017), including Chinwe Wosu, a two-time honoree. In addition, Brown has recruited and coached four NJAC Rookie of the Year selections (2009, 2010, 2013, 2017).

NJCU has reached the postseason in 11 of his first 13 seasons, highlighted by four NCAA Tournament appearances, including three in a row (2011, 2017, 2018, 2019). The Gothic Knights were selected for seven ECAC Tournaments (2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2020), winning the 2016 championship.

NJCU captured the 2011 New Jersey Athletic Conference championship and won two NJAC regular season titles (2016 and 2019). NJCU has reached the NJAC Tournament nine times, including seven consecutive years from 2013-20.

The greatest player in Siena College basketball history, Brown was named by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to the MAAC 40th Anniversary Men's Basketball Team in July, 2020. A Division I All-American who later became a 16-year professional player, he is still Siena's all-time leading scorer with 2,284 career points. His No. 4 jersey was retired on December 13, 2010 as part of a Division III/Division I basketball doubleheader at the Times Union Center in Albany.
