WAYNE, NJ --- The College of New Jersey's women's tennis team captured its 34th consecutive NJAC championship title on Saturday, Sept. 17, with an 8-1 road win at William Paterson.
The win also extends the Lions' conference win streak to 171-0, and secures the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship in May.
"We are very excited to win the 2016 NJAC championship and earn a NCAA berth," TCNJ Head Coach Scott Dicheck said. "This was a total team effort and is led by senior captain Anna Prestera."
The Lions opened the day with a sweep of doubles to earn the doubles point. TCNJ's Grace Minassian and Maddy Stoner were 8-3 winners of the WPU combo of Brittany LaBruna and Kaworu Ishikawa at first doubles. Sneha Rangu combined with Alyssa Baldi for an 8-0 win at the second spot, and Danna Tsay and Prestera were 8-0 winners at third doubles.
LaBruna, the three-time defending NJAC Player of the Year and All-American, took a straight set 6-2, 6-3 win at first singles for the Pioneers' point. TCNJ's Brittany Reedman, Stoner, Baldi, Prestera and Katie Buchbinder each won at straight sets in second through sixth singles, respectively.
Both squads return to the courts next weekend for the ITA Regionals at William Smith College. The three-day regionals are set for Sept. 24-26.
