Spotlight: Melissa Tobie, Montclair State

The NJAC Student-Athlete Spotlight this week comes from Montclair State University. A senior basketball player from Elizabeth, NJ, Melissa Tobie is currently pursuing a Math Education degree.

What made you choose your institution?
I chose Montclair State because I liked the academic opportunities it had to offer, and the coaching staff was really helpful and sincere.
What made you want to become a DIII collegiate athlete?
I chose to be a DIII athlete because I liked the balance between academics and athletics. I knew all the athletes were playing for the same reason as me; we love our sport.
What was your first memory of playing your sport?
I remember trying out for my third grade team and I could barely reach the basket when I shot the ball!
What has been the greatest or most memorable moment of your experience as a collegiate athlete?
Winning the NJAC championship for the first time my sophomore year was one of my most memorable experiences so far as a college athlete.
Do you have any pre-game rituals? If so, what are they?
As a team, we listen to music and sing before the games. Personally, I always put my shoes and kneepads on in a specific order before games.
What famous athlete do you look up to and why?
I always looked up to Mia Hamm growing up because she was a phenomenal athlete, and once she stopped playing she still remained active in the community and use her fame to help others.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In 5 years I see myself finished with graduate school and either teaching in high school or coaching basketball, or hopefully both!
What is your favorite part about being an NJAC student-athlete?
The NJAC is a competitive conference in all sports and I like how with each game the teams come ready to compete and play hard.
What is your biggest accomplishment off the court?
I think my team winning back-to-back NJAC Championships is a huge accomplishment.
