Student-Athlete Spotlight: Kean University's Kassandra Hernandez

PITMAN--There's no doubt the NJAC boasts some extremely talented athletes but we want fans to know that there's more to these athletes than just their accomplishments on the field, court, etc. The NJAC Student-Athlete Spotlight highlights one student-athlete each Friday.
 
The NJAC Student-Athlete Spotlight for the week ending December 14 comes to us from Kean University. A junior women's volleyball player from San Diego, CA, Kassandra Hernandez is currently pursuing a Marketing degree.

What made you choose your institution?
I'm a small town girl looking for big time opportunities in New York City, so Kean's location was perfect. Also, finishing school being a collegiate athlete and LOVING it at the same time was important to me. 

What made you want to become a DIII collegiate athlete? 
It wasn't the division that caught my attention exactly... It was the Kean University Athletic Training facility and being treated like a super star.

What was your first memory of playing your sport?
When I started I was 15 years old and I remember being one of the last players on the team to serve the ball over hand.

What has been the greatest or most memorable moment of your experience as a collegiate athlete?
So far being on the team one of my greatest memories is going back to my home state and playing in front of my family for the first time in 6 years!!!

Do you have any pre-game rituals? If so, what are they?
I watch a motivating youtube video called "Don't let you dreams end up in the graveyard" while I put peppermint oil on my feet, back, shoulders and behind my neck, then listen to 3LAU House playlist.

What famous athlete do you look up to?
The Boxer, philanthropist and social activist Muhammad Ali because of his perseverance throughout his lifetime.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Living in a big city and being on the events staff planning the NFL Super Bowl.

What is your favorite part of competing in the NJAC?
Being a member and representative of my school as well as my team.

What is your biggest accomplishment OFF the field, court, etc.?
My biggest accomplishment off the court is being able to say that I did not quit school after all the trials and tribulations with my dad having stage four brain cancer.
